There are two different ways of approaching Cockermouth from the A66.

The easiest but slightly longer route from Keswick is to keep on the A66 and follow the signs to Cockermouth.  When you reach Cockermouth, go along Main Street through the town and over the bridge. Turn right into the Market Place and go past the first right turn (which leads into a car park.)  Turn second right into Kirkgate.  There is a sign on the corner of the building which reads “Kirkgate Corner”. At this point Kirkgate is quite a narrow road and if cars are coming down the hill you will have to wait before entering Kirkgate.  Continue uphill, past the Kirkgate Centre and the Bitter End pub on the left and the Church on the right. Number 26 is about a third of a way up Kirkgate on the right hand side just as the road starts to widen.

The other route is more direct. Again follow the A66 which becomes a dual carriageway and then becomes a single width carriageway, after which take the first right turn and follow the road round to the left, following the signs to Embleton.  After a short distance, the road then comes to another junction, where you have to give way and then bear left. The road you are on runs parallel to the A66 which is down to your left and passes through the village of Embleton.  After a couple of miles, you pass a school on your right hand side and continue until you reach outskirts of Cockermouth where the road narrows and goes downhill. Then take the first left turn into the Market Place and second right into Kirkgate. (This way you approach Cockermouth from the other direction.)
